About this site
This site strives to be a source of information with regular updates on climate change lawsuits around the world. From cases grounded in human rights claims to tort suits and greenwashing cases, strategic litigation relating to the climate crisis has grown substantially and employed a diverse range of approaches in recent years. And as the crisis continues and worsens, climate litigation is likely to rise as people increasingly seek relief through the courts. The trend has already begun, with over 2,000 cases filed in more than 40 countries as of June 2022, more than half of which were filed since 2015. As the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) recognized in its Sixth Assessment Report: "Climate litigation is growing and can affect the outcome and ambition of climate governance." Climate in the Courts is a source of news and information on this rapidly growing space.
Additional information including databases of climate cases and other relevant sources and news reporting can be found under Resources. The Climate Case Tracker offers some background on select cases. But mostly this site is meant to provide updates and analyses on climate-related cases going forward.
